Cocktail-Inspired Chaos: The Manhattan Mishap Chick Lit Characters as Drinks

When it comes to chick lit characters, there are a few things I love about them: their humorous dialogue, their quirky personalities, and how they can, more often than not, relate to yourself or someone you know. Chick lit characters often find themselves navigating the complexities of modern life, balancing career aspirations, friendships, and romance in vibrant urban settings. These relatable heroines are typically witty, ambitious, and faced with a series of amusing mishaps that ultimately lead to personal growth and self-discovery.

Whether it’s managing awkward dates in bustling cafes or tackling career dilemmas in high-stakes work environments, their journeys are infused with humour and heart. With a blend of charm and resilience, they confront societal expectations and forge their own paths, making readers laugh and inspiring them to embrace life’s unpredictability.

So, I got to thinking in terms of cocktail-inspired chaos. What would each chick lit character in my debut novel The Manhattan Mishap love to drink on a night out? What kind of drink would they be? In the book, it’s obvious what Margot loves: a gin martini with a lemon twist. But what about the others? Here are The Manhattan Mishap characters as cocktails.

Margot: Gin Martini

A gin martini with a lemon twist is the perfect embodiment of sophistication and simplicity. Like The Manhattan Mishap’s heroine, Margot Moss. The crisp, botanical flavours of the gin meld seamlessly with the dry vermouth, creating a refreshing base that’s invigorated by the bright citrus notes of the lemon twist. The twist itself, a delicate curl of lemon peel, adds a fragrant touch, releasing its essential oils as it adorns the glass. Served chilled in a classic cocktail glass, this drink not only stimulates the palate but also makes a stylish statement, easily tempting anyone seeking a moment of elegance in their evening.

Once upon a time, I drank martinis like this, too. However, once I hit my 30s, my distaste of olives vanished (albeit not completely) and I now thoroughly enjoy sipping on a dirty martini. Preferably with gin and three olives. Perhaps more like The Manhattan Mishap’s stylish work husband, Liao. You’ll see what kind of cocktail he is below.

Since she’s the main character, I’ll share a few other details about Miss Moss: she’s gregarious, witty, and career-driven. She’s a sucker for a cute guy with an accent and she prefers thrifted garments over fast fashion hauls. Her go-to takeout order is sushi with a side of edamame. Finally, she’s obsessed with her tiny Maltipoo, Lola.

Jessie: Red Sangria

Jessie is the quintessential best friend to Margot. They’ve known each other since childhood and she’s as dependable as this cocktail. The vibrant hues of classic red sangria catch the eye, beckoning you to take a sip and indulge in its refreshing essence. A blend of fruity red wine, zesty citrus slices, and a hint of brandy creates a symphony of flavors that dance on the palate. Each sip bursts with the sweetness of ripe strawberries and the tartness of oranges, complemented by a touch of cinnamon that whispers of warmth. Served over crushed ice, it becomes a perfect companion for lazy afternoons or lively gatherings, inviting laughter and conversation to flow as freely as the drink itself. This timeless concoction transforms any moment into a celebration, offering a delightful respite from the everyday hustle.

Liao: Extra Dirty Martini

A preference for a dirty martini reveals a discerning palate with a penchant for both sophistication and edge. Like Liao, this choice suggests that you appreciate the classic elements of a well-crafted cocktail, favouring the boldness of gin or vodka tempered by the briny notes of olive juice. It signals a willingness to break from the ordinary and embrace complexity, reflecting a personality that enjoys the finer things in life but doesn’t shy away from a little messiness. Ultimately, loving a dirty martini indicates a balance of refinement and a flirtation with the unapologetic, embodying a spirit of fun that’s not afraid to get its hands dirty.

There’s something alluring about the briny sophistication of a dirty martini that keeps drawing me back. The cold, crisp blend of gin stirred to perfection. But it’s the delicate splash of olive juice—like a secret ingredient whispering its salty tales—that gives this classic cocktail its edge. Each sip is an enticing dance of flavors, where the richness of the olives melds seamlessly with the spirit, creating a savory experience that feels indulgent yet refreshingly vibrant. In the world of cocktails, a dirty martini is not just a drink; it’s a statement of taste and a moment of pure, unapologetic pleasure.

Chantelle: Grapefruit Mimosa

Sipping a grapefruit mimosa suggests a taste for the refined yet playful, embodying a blend of sophistication and casual fun. Chantelle knows how to have a good time, but she’s also very career-focused. The bright, tart flavour of grapefruit paired with the effervescence of champagne reflects a vibrant personality, one that enjoys both the simple pleasures and the zest of life. This choice hints at a love for sunny brunches, lively conversations, and a penchant for embracing new experiences with a certain flair. It showcases an appreciation for balance; lightness tempered with a hint of complexity, making every sip a celebration of the moment.

Perla: Death in the Afternoon

Made with champagne and absinthe, this cocktail isn’t messing around. Like Perla, if you don’t limit yourself and drink very slowly, it’ll sneak up on you and probably kick your ass. This deadly cocktail signifies an appreciation for the finer (and more daring) things in life, blending elegance with a hint of rebellion. Its mix of absinthe and champagne encapsulates a bold spirit that revels in the contrasting flavours of bitterness and sweetness. It reflects a taste for the unconventional and an indulgence in life’s ephemeral pleasures. Choosing this drink suggests a personality that embraces both mystery and sophistication, a hint of risk wrapped in a glamorous package, making a statement that you relish savouring the complexity of existence.
